Mahashivratri at Kashi Vishwanath

Mahashivratri — the great night of Shiva — is the most important night at Kashi Vishwanath, in Shiva's own city. Devotees queue through the night for darshan and abhishek.

When

Phalguna Krishna Chaturdashi (February or March). Confirm the date on this year panchang.

What happens

A night-long jagran, rudrabhishek and a special shringar of the Jyotirlinga, with a grand procession (baraat) of Lord Shiva through the city.

For darshan

  • Expect very long queues — go very early or book Sugam Darshan.
  • Phones, cameras and leather are not allowed inside — use the free lockers.
  • Many devotees fast and wear simple clothes.
