A child's first tonsure
Mundan (chudakarana) is one of the sixteen sanskars — the ceremonial shaving of a child's first hair, usually in the first or third year. The hair is offered to the deity or the river as a prayer for the child's long life, health and release from past-life ties. Families travel to Kashi to perform it at an auspicious muhurat with a Pandit Ji.
